To become a postman or woman might not seem like one of the most exciting Careers ever, however there is rather a lot of scope for growth which a lot of people are ignorant of. I wish to give some information on this role and what Careers people can get into via this role, to help individuals who are maybe searching for New careers to move into. Hopefully it will give insight into a job which lots of people probably would not consider as a New career choice, and help people appreciate there is a great deal on offer by taking a job such as this.

As with many New careers, as a postman you will be starting at the bottom and then working your way up through the business. There are several different roles on offer to begin with, from sorting mail at a processing centre and assigning it to the right area, to physically heading out and delivering letters by hand. Some roles you will do a mixture of these jobs, and some roles work solely in the sorting centres, and they do not need to go out and make deliveries at all. The number of hours you work depends on the kind of job you take on – postal deliveries are early mornings, Monday through to Saturday, and working in one of the bigger depots or processing centres will more than likely ask that you work shifts, which can be a bit more flexible for some people. Most pay for these jobs range from ?12,000 to approximately

?16,000, although it can rise as high as ?22,000 for inner London.

In order to become a postman you need to be physically fit – there is a large amount of heavy lifting involved, both in the processing centres and out delivering. Whilst out delivering you will be required to work in all weathers, and generally you will walk around six to eight miles every day, so it can get pretty tiring. Honesty is another very important aspect of becoming a postman – everyday you will dealing with all types of packages with all kinds of contents, from personal letters to costly items. As such Royal Mail has a very important reputation to uphold, so they will be employing staff they can trust. Other beneficial qualities are a good eye for detail, and the capacity to work well in a team or on your own, unsupervised.

Once you gain experience of working for a large organisation like this, you might wish to start contemplating a New career path that will then allow you to improve your professional growth. There are lots of New careers you might consider going into – just one of the benefits of working for a huge organisation such as Royal Mail. Normally, the path of development takes you to supervisory, then management roles. Once you are there, you have a large amount of choice, as you could opt to go into something such as marketing and advertising, or human resources management, or logistics planning. There are a number of choices here for the committed individual, as long as you show commitment and enthusiasm for your career you could do well in a huge organisation such as this.
